【受講生の声】アメリカの公立小学校で大切にしていることとは

今回は7月末にアメリカへの赴任で東京からカリフォルニアへと、子育ての地が激変した受講生RUさんのレポートをお届けします。

ことばも文化も全然違う世界にいきなり飛び込んで、子どもたちはうまく適応していけるのでしょうか。

アメリカでの外国人の受け入れ態勢の充実ぶりがわかると同時に、

実は実は、日本にいるよりずっと「かおりメソッド」との共通点が多く、「かおりメソッド」で育てることは、実はアメリカスタイルなのかも、と腑に落ちる内容になっています。

小4、小2の息子達が8月末からアメリカのカリフォルニア州の公立小学校に通い始めました。


ちょうどアメリカの新学年の新学期（日本でいう4月の最初の授業）にあたり、「Back to School」というちょっとしたお祭りムード！（小4、小2の息子達は冬生まれなのでアメリカでもそのままGrade4,Grade2です。）


全く英語が出来ない息子達ですが、新学期が始まる１週間前に英語力テストを受け、ELD(English Language Development)という英語の基礎力を習得する事に特化したクラスのある学校に振り分けられます。


通常アメリカでは住所で学区が区切られているので通える小学校は決まっていますが、渡米したばかりの子供達は地域のELDがある学校に振り分けられます。


そこで1〜2年、基礎的な英語力を身に付けてから住んでいる住所の学区に戻るというシステムです。


今年のELDクラスはアジア人比率高めで、中国、韓国、日本、インド、アフガニスタンなど。


学校に慣れるまで大変かな？とか、英会話力ゼロでどうなるのかな？など、多少の不安はあったものの、良くも悪くも物怖じしない人見知りもしない息子達。どうにかなるだろうなあ、と送り出しました。


通い始めて2か月弱、子供達はとにかく学校が楽しい様子。


何が楽しいのか聞いたところ

・机や椅子がなくてみんなで円陣を組んだり、好きなところに座れる。授業も歌を歌ったり、塗り絵をしたり、外で運動したり、キチンとしていなくて良い。

・10時頃にスナックタイムがあってお菓子を食べられるので嬉しいし、お昼までお腹が空き過ぎない。

・ランチもカフェテリアで好きなものをトレーに載せて好きな場所で食べられて楽しい。（もちろんお弁当もO.K.なので、週3お弁当を持たせてるけど、カフェテリアで食べる事に夢中。）


など、自由度が高いのが嬉しい様子。


私から見ても、学校の雰囲気から先生達の格好まで、とてもカジュアル！長男の担任の先生は背中にも足首にもタトゥーが入っていますが、ELDクラスのベテランでとてもよい先生です。お迎え時の親も基本的にTシャツ短パンにビーチサンダル 。


そして学校からの配布物や先生との関わりの中で、すごく…！


と思う事がいくつかあったので取り上げてみます。

ものすごい意訳をしてますが、

難しい事でもやってみよう！自分らしく、自分に優しく。

そのままで最高！

というスタンス。

英語力向上のために家庭内での英語での読み聞かせを推奨されたので、


「どんな本がオススメ？」と担任の先生に問い合わせたところ、

「とにかく子供が楽しめるもの。英語を好きになってくれることが何より大事」という返信。

そこで、現在進行形で子供達がハマっているスターウォーズの絵本を図書館で借りてきて読み聞かせています。


うっかり真面目な知育本とかを選んでしまいそうですが、

「子供が楽しめる事が大前提！」

ある日の配布物


「家庭内で前夜、朝、週末に何かあった時は担任の先生に伝えてください。詳細は話さなくて大丈夫。ただ「Handle with care（取り扱い注意）」と伝えてくれれば、その日はお子さんをいつも以上にケアします。」

という内容。


子供の心の安定のためには家庭が安心安全の場であることは大事だけれど、時には叱りすぎてしまったり、夫婦喧嘩をしたり…あります！前日の家庭内での事が子供メンタルに影響してしまう事、多かれ少なかれどこのお家にもあると思います。


そんな時に「何かあったら学校を頼ってね。詳しく話さなくても大丈夫」とか言われたら少し救われた気持ちになりませんか？

先生にこの取り組みに感動した事を伝えたところ、

「親が楽しくリラックスしている事が子供のメンタルに何より大事。ママが笑顔でいられる事が大切。」と。


これも、どこかで聞いた事がありませんか？

そうなんです、ここまで取り上げて来たのはアメリカの小学校で私が感じた、かおりメソッドなんです！


アメリカの小学校生活を始めて2か月半。母親と子供達の変化


日本では、小4ともなると周りが大手の受験塾に通い始める頃。かおりメソッドで培った自分軸を意識していても、周囲の流れの中で「やっぱり勉強系の習い事させるべき？」と焦ったり、あまりに勉強をしない我が子にイライラしたり。「いま勉強させないと将来ヤバいことになるのでは？」という心配が根底にありました。


アメリカは子供の習い事というとスポーツが中心で、勉強系の塾が存在しません。どうしても算数が好きで先に進みたい子のための数学を教える教室などはあっても、親が通わせるものではありません。


小学生のうちはとにかく遊ばせてスポーツをさせて、ありのままの自分で、毎日楽しく過ごす事を徹底させている。夏休みは6月から8月下旬まで3か月弱だけど、学校からは「たくさん遊んで、いろんな経験をして、家族との時間を大切に！」といわれるだけで、宿題も少なくて夏期講習とか存在しません。


あれ？小学生の時から学習塾に通わせてなくてもアメリカから優秀な人は出続けているし、アメリカという国は成り立っている。


私は子供達に幸せな人生を送って欲しいけど、それは日本的なお勉強ができる事とイコールではない。


何か、かおりメソッドがストンと腹落ちする感覚というか、今まで囚われていたのは何だったのだろう？という新たな感覚です。


そんなこんなで、渡米して2か月弱ですが、私自身の気持ちがかなり楽です。


そして、子供達はというと、

アメリカに来てから習い事は土曜日の日本語補習校だけなので、時間に追われない。帰ってきたら居住者用プールに行って夕方まで泳ぐ、近所の子（英語しか話せない兄妹）と外で汗だくになって遊ぶ日々なので真っ黒に日焼け。

帰宅したら日本語補修校の宿題をやって、ご飯を食べて、お風呂に入って寝る。


思い切り遊んだ後だからか、子供たちがすんなり勉強するようになった。結構な量の宿題をこなしている。


気が付いたら日本にいた時から比べるとゲーム時間が激減している。けど、本人達は不満もなさそう。 （↓なぜかハロウィン用のお面つけたまま勉強。）


そして、毎日の友達との関わりが十分学びになってる事にも気付きました。


近所の子とは英語が喋れなくても長時間楽しく遊んでいて、実は英語の勉強になってるだろうし（彼らの方も日本語を覚えて「なんでー！」と叫んでた（笑）。


いろいろな国から来ているクラスメイトとの文化の違いを体感する事も学びになっているだろうし、長男の仲良しのクラスメイトがアフガニスタン出身で、彼の母国で起きている事が学びのきっかけになったりもしている。


まだ2か月弱ですが、日本から離れる事で再確認できたかおりメソッドの良さを記事にしてみました。
